A joyful, informative and swinging ride through the life and music of trumpet legend Clifford Brown. This dream line up pays homage to the great man and his tragically short career, playing some of his classic arrangements from the Max Roach Quintet, among others. The band features the lineup of Freddie Gavita on trumpet, rising young star of the tenor saxophone Richard Shepherd, with swinging support from NYJO alumnus Rob Barron piano, award winning Adam King on double bass, and Matt Home on the drums.

In his tragically short 25 year life, before his car crash death, Clifford Brown's ability to blend technique with emotion and create a rich, full sound, earned him praise as the pre-eminent trumpeter. Starting in 1952, Brown's short four years of jazz recordings began with the Art Blakey band and reached the high spots with the famous quintet featuring Sonny Rollins & Max Roach. Brown's many compositions, including Daahoud, Sandu and Joyspring live as standards in the jazz repertoire.

Freddie Gavita has quickly risen to being one of the hottest new trumpet talents in London in the past few years, regularly leading his own quartet at Ronnie Scott's, and performing alongside a wide range of artists from Paloma Faith to Stan Sulzmann.

Will Arnold-Forster

Support tonight from up-and-coming guitarist Will Arnold-Forster, leading a trio featuring young alto-saxophonist Sam Braysher and renowned Scottish double bassist Calum Gourlay, playing their own arrangements of standards from the Rodgers and Hart songbook.
